E-E-A-T

E-E-A-T is Google's four-letter shorthand for the signals a human quality rater looks for — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness — before deciding a page deserves to rank.

E-E-A-T — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness — is the framework Google's human Search Quality Raters use to judge whether a web page deserves to rank, especially for 'Your Money or Your Life' topics like health, finance, and legal. The initial E for Experience was added in December 2022; the original three letters, E-A-T, had been in the Search Quality Rater Guidelines since 2014. E-E-A-T is not a ranking algorithm — Google does not have a direct 'E-E-A-T score' — but the signals raters look for are the same signals algorithms proxy: a named author with a real biography, first-person experience of the topic being written about, external citations from authoritative sources, clear contact information, and the absence of AI-spam markers. For a small-business website in 2026, E-E-A-T is less about gaming Google and more about writing pages a sceptical human reviewer would trust on the first read.

How I apply it on this site

Every essay on this site is signed by Gareth Wray, with a real LinkedIn, a real GitHub, a real email address, and a first-person voice. The cost-pillar essay cites DataForSEO April 2026 volumes and my own £1,000 number, with working shown. The about page has a photograph of me and a specific professional history. That combination — named author, first-person evidence, verifiable credentials — is what the E-E-A-T framework calls for, and what AI overviews quote.

Why the gap will keep widening

Anonymous content farms and AI-generated listicles rank worse in 2026 than they did in 2022. The gap will keep widening. For a small business, the highest-leverage SEO work is not keyword tweaking — it is making sure every page has a real human behind it, with verifiable credentials and first-person evidence. That is also what gets you cited by AI overviews rather than summarised around.
