Before I wrote a line of code I sold for a living: vehicle tracking, recruitment, and booking appointments for other people's sales teams. Different products, the same job every day: the phone, the pipeline, and finding out what a buyer needs to hear before they say yes.
That is still the job. A website is a salesperson that never sleeps, and most small business sites have never been told what to say.

For a year I qualified small businesses for an eBay campaign, and I asked every one of them that question. Nine times out of ten the answer was "no time", or that they were half-doing it. Not because they did not care. Marketing was the job that got done after every other job, which meant it mostly did not get done at all.

Why I build instead of briefing.
Two reasons. I wanted out of a sales career, and I think sales and marketing in one person is the combination that stands out: from the first call to the page that converts. So I spent 5+ years studying conversion, copy and SEO, then started building the pages myself instead of briefing them out.
A confession: when I first tried to build a site, in WordPress, I hated it. Absolutely horrendous. That is where "never WordPress" comes from. Every site I build now is custom code in Astro, or Webflow when you want to edit it yourself.

What I will not do.
Agencies price far above the work, partly for real overheads, and are sometimes not even that good. I would rather say what I do not do than sell you something you do not need. If you need any of these, I will tell you so on the call and point you at someone better for it.
