Service 01 · Website design and SEO · Ipswich, Suffolk, for the UK

A small-business website, live in seven days.

Website design for UK small businesses, done properly and done fast: one bespoke, hand-coded site with the SEO foundations built in, briefed on a Tuesday and live the following Tuesday. From £1,000 for a five-to-seven-page site, full refund if it is not live on the day. I'm a freelance web designer in Ipswich, not an agency, so you speak to the person who builds it. Bigger sites are scoped on the call as consecutive sprints.

What the £1,000 buys.

  • The briefA 30-minute call on the Tuesday and a one-page written brief you sign off the same day. Goals, audience, pages, voice, what done looks like.
  • Bespoke designDesigned from a blank page for your business, not a theme with your logo dropped in. Key frames on Wednesday, every page signed off on Thursday. What a bespoke website actually is, since the word gets used loosely.
  • Hand-coded buildAstro or Next.js, whichever suits the job. No page builder, no plugins to update, nothing rented from a platform. Loads in under a second on a phone.
  • The standardsLighthouse 95 or higher across all four categories on mobile. Core Web Vitals green. WCAG 2.2 AA. Structured data, sitemap, llms.txt, analytics with consent. On every build, not as extras.
  • One round of revisionsBuilt into Saturday. Wording, images, order of sections. Scope that would break the week rolls into a further sprint at a fresh quote, agreed first.
  • Launch and handoverLive on your domain on the Tuesday. Code in your GitHub, hosting in your name, a short written guide, and a call if you want one.
  • Not includedPhotography, copywriting from scratch, and the domain, which you pay your registrar directly, about £10 to £15 a year. Hosting is free.
  • After launchOptional. Changes made each month for £99 a month, or a further sprint for anything bigger.

Bigger than seven pages? Say so on the call.

The one-week sprint fits most small-business sites: home, services, about, work, contact and a page or two of writing. A site that needs more than that, a proper shop, a booking system, a dozen service pages with their own case studies, needs more than a week, and pretending otherwise is how agencies end up three months late.

So the price is from £1,000. On the discovery call I scope the site, tell you how many sprints it needs, and quote a fixed total before you pay. Each sprint still runs Tuesday to Tuesday with a staging link from the first week. For what the same site costs from a freelancer, a studio or an agency, read the cost guide.

In his words

You give him the material and the image of what you want, and within a few hours it comes back, working in a way that pretty much manages itself.

Mac runs an online coaching business in Sheffield. The site, a calorie calculator and a protein-guide lead magnet, all hand-coded, all his. The case study has the brief and what shipped.

Gareth Wray, freelance web designer, Ipswich

A freelance web designer, not an agency.

Gareth Wray, Ipswich. Twelve years in B2B sales and five years studying what makes a page convert before I started building sites myself. I take the brief, design the pages, write the code and answer the phone. There is no account manager, because there is nobody to manage.

  • What I will not do
  • Twelve-week timelines for a five-page site
  • Builds on Squarespace, Wix or Webflow
  • Stock photos of people who do not work there
  • Start before the brief is agreed
More about Gareth

Website design and SEO in the same build.

Most sites are designed first and optimised later, by someone else, at a second fee. Here the two happen in the same week. The page structure follows what people search for, so each service has its own page rather than a paragraph on the home page. Titles, headings and the first sentence say what you do and where. Structured data, a sitemap and an llms.txt file ship with the build. The site loads in under a second on a phone, which Google measures and your customers feel.

That is the foundation. Getting the site found month after month, the content pages, the links, the AI-answer layer, is a separate job with its own price:SEO services from £500 a month.

Questions people ask before they book.

How much does a small business website cost in the UK?From me, £1,000 for a bespoke, hand-coded site of up to about seven pages, live in seven days, hosting free afterwards. Across the UK a freelancer typically charges £1,500 to £5,000 for the same thing and an agency £8,000 to £15,000, over eight to twelve weeks. The full picture, by site type and who builds it, is in the cost guide.
What does "from £1,000" mean in practice?£1,000 is the price of one sprint: a bespoke site of up to about seven pages, brief to live in seven days. If the site you need is bigger, a shop, a members area, twenty pages of services, it needs more than a week. I scope that on the discovery call and quote it as a fixed number of sprints before you pay anything.
Is it still live in seven days if my site is bigger?A larger site is planned as consecutive sprints, each Tuesday to Tuesday, with a staging link you can see from the first week. The refund guarantee applies to the final live date we agree in writing.
Why Tuesday to Tuesday?Because a brief on a Monday morning is rushed, and a launch on a Sunday leaves nobody in the office to notice it. A Tuesday brief gives you Monday to gather the material, and a Tuesday launch means the site goes live on a working day with me watching it.
What do you need from me?About two hours across the week. The brief on Tuesday, a design decision on Wednesday, your copy and photographs by Thursday, and one round of revisions on Saturday. If the material is late, the week slides, so I say so on the call.
Who owns the code when it is done? You do. Fully. The repository transfers to your GitHub, the hosting project to your account, and the domain stays on your registrar. No lock-in.
Do you do the copy and the photos?Copy polishing is included: you bring the substance, I tighten the wording. Photography is not. Bring real photos or commission them. Stock imagery is never used on a bespoke build.
What happens after launch?Nothing, unless you want it to. Hosting is free and there is no retainer. The site is handed over with a short written guide. If you want changes made each month, that is £99 a month. Bigger changes are a further sprint, and because the code is standard, any developer can work on it.
