Concepts, not clients

Four trades, four different first screens.

I designed these for this page to show the thinking, not to pass as work. The businesses are made up, the photos are AI-generated, and the phone numbers are Ofcom's reserved drama numbers. What carries over is the idea: the first screen answers the question that trade's customer is actually asking.

Next free visits on the first screen, with prices from. The question every customer has: can you come this week, and roughly what will it cost?

Concept homepage for a plumbing and heating firm, Copperline: Boilers fixed fast, bathrooms done properly, with today's callouts by town, on desktop and phone
Plumbers and heating engineers

Copperline Plumbing & Heating (concept)

Two jobs, two buttons: the emergency and the planned bathroom. Today's callouts by town, so a broken boiler knows to ring now.

Bigger jobs are bought on trust, so the page leads with one project manager, fixed stage payments and a finished extension.

Concept homepage for a roofer, Slatewright Roofing: Roof leaking? See the problem before you pay a penny, with a drone survey report, on desktop and phone

Nobody can see their own roof. The offer is a drone survey with photos and a fixed price, so the customer decides with the evidence.

How much does a website for a tradesman cost?

£1,000 a sprint, paid before work starts, for a bespoke site of up to about seven pages, live in seven days, with a full refund if it is not. Hosting is free on a custom build, and the domain stays in your name.

You can get a template site for a few hundred pounds, and for a sole trader booked solid on word of mouth that may be all you need. This is for firms that want the bigger jobs, a new area, or fewer enquiries from people who are only price-shopping. The breakdown is on website pricing.

Do I need a website if I'm on Checkatrade?

Keep the lead sites while they pay. But the customer who finds you there, or hears your name from a neighbour, looks you up before they ring. A thin profile and no site of your own loses that job to the firm that looks more established.

Your own site is also where enquiries come in that you do not share with three other quotes. I have built the other side of this: Unlimitely sells leads to extension builders, and its site compares itself against Checkatrade, MyBuilder, Rated People and Bark page by page.

Will it make the phone ring?

Most trades sites hide the two things a customer wants: can you come, and roughly what will it cost. Every page puts your number one tap away, shows prices from where you are happy to, and keeps the quote form to a few boxes.

Then the proof: photos of real jobs, the towns you cover, your registrations and guarantees, and reviews. That is what turns a look into a call.

Will I show up on Google Maps and "near me"?

Local search rests on two things: your site and your Google Business Profile. The site is my job: a page for each service and the towns you cover, your name, number and area written the same way everywhere, local business schema and fast pages.

The profile and the reviews decide the map. When I measured 1,253 firms in Suffolk, the ones AI answers named carried several times the Google reviews of the rest. Keeping you climbing is the monthly local SEO work.

Can I add photos of my jobs myself?

Yes, if it is built in Webflow. You edit text, photos and projects yourself, from a free account of your own, whenever a job is finished.

On a custom build, the fastest kind of site, send me the photos and I add them as part of the £99 a month changes. Either way, no WordPress plugins to update and nothing that breaks when you are on a roof.

Have you built for trades before?

Not a tradesman's own site yet, and I would rather say so. The nearest is Unlimitely: a 29-page site for a firm that sells leads to extension builders, with a lead cost calculator, an area checker and comparison pages against the lead sites builders already use.

The four concepts above show how I would approach your trade. The first trades build goes on this page, with the owner's permission. Lewis from Unlimitely talks about the work on camera below.

Questions people ask before they book.

How much does a website for a tradesman cost? £1,000 a sprint for a bespoke site of up to about seven pages, live in seven days, paid before work starts. Hosting is free on a custom build, and the domain stays in your name.
Are the four designs on this page real businesses? No. They are concepts I designed to show how a trades homepage should work. The businesses are made up, the photos are AI-generated, and the phone numbers are Ofcom's reserved drama numbers. Your site starts from your own work, prices and area.
Do I still need Checkatrade or MyBuilder? Keep them while they pay. A site of your own is where the customers who already found you go to check you out, and where leads come in that you do not share with three other firms.
Can I add photos of my jobs myself? Yes, if it is built in Webflow: you edit text and photos yourself from a free account of your own. On a custom build I add them for you as part of the £99 a month changes, if you want them.
Will it get me into the Google Maps results? The site does its half: a page for each service and the towns you cover, your details written the same way everywhere, and local business schema. The map results come from your Google Business Profile and reviews, which is the monthly local SEO work.
I'm a one-man band. Is this for me? If most of your work is word of mouth and you are booked solid, you probably do not need it yet. It pays when you want bigger jobs, a new area, or fewer tyre-kickers from lead sites.
