How much does a freelance SEO consultant cost?

Senior freelancers charge £120 to £250 an hour, or £300 to £1,200 a month for a small business. Agencies start at around £1,500 a month. The difference is mostly who does the work and how many people sit between you and them.

I do not bill by the hour. One monthly figure, from £500 for a small site in an ordinary market, covers the pages, the links, the fixes and the report, and it is written down before the first month starts. The detail is on SEO packages and pricing.

SEO consultant or SEO agency: which is better?

For a small business, usually the consultant, as long as the consultant does the work. An agency adds an account manager, a team and a contract, and you pay for all three. A consultant who only advises hands you a document and leaves the work with you.

What you want is one person who knows your business, writes the pages and makes the fixes, and who you can ring. That is the job here.

What does an SEO consultant actually do?

Each month: research what your buyers search for, write the pages that answer it, sharpen the pages already on page two, fix what stops the site being crawled and indexed, earn and buy links, and check whether ChatGPT and Google's AI answers name you.

Then one page of report: clicks, impressions, position, what shipped and what is next. The technical side has its own page, technical SEO, and so does the local side, local SEO.

Will you just advise, or do the work?

The work. Advice you have to implement yourself is the reason most small business SEO never happens: it becomes the job done after every other job. For a year I qualified small businesses by phone, and nine times out of ten the answer to "Do you do any marketing?" was "no time".

So I need twenty minutes a month from you, for the questions only you can answer. The rest is mine.

How do I know you're any good?

Three things you can check. My website-cost guide was cited by ChatGPT 22 days after it went up. I measured how 1,253 Suffolk firms show up in AI answers, in the Suffolk study. And Matt Henderson talks about the audit I did for his business on camera, below.

What I will not show you is a ranking promise. Those are guesses with your money.

How long before SEO starts to work?

New pages usually take six to twelve weeks to settle in Google, and longer to be cited by AI answers. Links shorten that, and pages already on page two move first.

The month is rolling, so if a report does not justify the next month, cancel. In AI answers the visibility is the work, and it stops when the work stops: my own citation faded once I stopped working on that page.
